Sports card markets move fast. A Wayne Gretzky PSA 8 you pledged as collateral six months ago might have appreciated $10,000–$15,000 since your loan was originated. That appreciation is real equity β€” and with CardPawn's Loan Top-Up, you can access it without repaying your existing loan, returning your card, or jumping through any new hoops.

What Is a Loan Top-Up?

A Loan Top-Up is a re-appraisal of your collateral card at current market value, followed by an offer to advance additional cash against the increased equity β€” up to the same LTV ratio applied on your original loan.

Think of it like a home equity refinance. A homeowner with a $300K mortgage on a house now worth $500K has $200K in new equity they can borrow against. A CardPawn borrower with a $26,000 loan on a card now worth $52,000 has approximately $7,800 in new equity available β€” without selling the card or ending the existing loan.

The Mechanics: Step by Step

  1. You request a re-appraisal
Email loans@cardpawn.ca with your loan number and "Top-Up Request" in the subject. Alternatively, use the top-up request link in your account dashboard. No fee, no obligation.
  2. We appraise against current market data
Our appraisers pull fresh comparables: last 5 eBay sold listings, recent PWCC/Goldin results, and the current PSA pop report β€” all for your specific card and grade, which is already documented in our vault records. No photos needed from you; the card is right here.
  3. We calculate the available equity
Available top-up = (New appraised value Γ— LTV%) βˆ’ Outstanding loan balance
If the result is at least $500 CAD, a top-up offer is issued.
  4. You receive the top-up offer
The offer shows: additional cash amount, new total loan balance, updated monthly fee, and revised term. Zero obligation to accept. Offer is valid for 48 hours.
  5. Accept and receive funds
Accept online. Additional cash wired to your account within 2 hours β€” same business day.

Top-Up vs. Repaying and Re-Applying

An alternative approach to accessing appreciated equity is to repay the loan in full, receive your card, then resubmit it for a new loan at the higher current value. A top-up is almost always more efficient:

Top-Up Eligibility at a Glance

  • βœ… Card must show a minimum 15% appreciation over original appraised value
  • βœ… Minimum disbursement of $500 CAD
  • βœ… Loan must be current β€” no missed or late payments
  • βœ… Available once per 90 days per card
  • βœ… Re-appraisal is free β€” no cost to request
  • βœ… No obligation β€” decline the offer at no penalty

Downside Scenario: What If the Card Drops Instead?

If your card's value falls rather than rises, nothing changes. Your repayment obligation is locked at the original loan terms. We issue no margin calls and require no additional collateral. The downside is fully covered β€” read the full details on our Loan Protection page.

Both Directions Covered

Up: Loan Top-Up unlocks appreciated equity. Down: non-recourse protection means zero personal liability. This is why serious collectors use CardPawn instead of margin accounts or personal loans β€” you win on the upside and are fully protected on the downside.

Email loans@cardpawn.ca with subject line: "Top-Up Request β€” Loan #[your loan number]". Include any recent comparable sales you're aware of to support the re-appraisal. We'll respond with a re-appraisal and offer within 2 business hours.
